COMPLETING THE APPLICATION (A Three Part Process)
PART ONE: Information About You
- Register for a category or categories for which you plan to participate (Acting, Singing, Dancing, Technical). Please mark all that apply; you may register for as many categories as you are qualified. Note that those who mark Acting only will be given 60 seconds for a monologue, including name and number, those who mark Singing only will be given 60 seconds for a song, including name and number, and those who indicate both Acting and Singing will be given 90 seconds for a monologue and song, including name and number. If you are a performer and are qualified to do technical work, list all relevant experience. Many companies require actors in minor roles or chorus members to double as technicians so your chances of employment may be enhanced by technical experience.
- Fill out all personal information.
- Fill out your acting, singing, dancing, and technical experience. You may add as many lines as are needed.
- Answer the questions regarding availability, internships, musical instruments, and stage combat experience.
PART TWO: Your Sponsor and Photo Applicants must have previous training and experience in the theatre, and it must be verified by a sponsor’s certification. Applications will not be complete without this certification. Please contact your sponsor to verify their information and fill in their Name, Title, Email address, and Phone Number on the application form. A sponsor can be a director, professor, or acting coach and should be familiar with your work. Your sponsor’s verification is required to complete your application.

PART THREE: Payment
- The non-refundable registration fee is $55.00.

After we have received your sponsor’s certification, which completes the registration process, you will be issued an audition number and you will receive an email registration confirmation. The email will include an audition number, an audition schedule and a campus map.
Special Note to Technicians Technicians must pre-register! Complete the registration in full (including photo). Position descriptions (salary, benefits, and minimum requirements) will be posted in the lobby of on Saturday, January 17, 2015, along with a list of interview times and callback locations for each company. Those applying for tech jobs should (1) check the company callback schedule, then (2) sign up for an interview on the sheet posted at the company’s callback location.
Check-in time: Saturday, January 17, 2015 from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m., in the lobby of Wright Auditorium on the campus of East Carolina University. A campus map will be emailed to you in the confirmation packet.
The Required Audition Briefing will begin at 8:00 a.m. in Wright Auditorium.
- Acting & Singing auditions will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will run until 3:30 p.m. Performers will audition in groups of 25. Callbacks will be posted at the end of each group.
- Acting/Singing auditions will be 90 Seconds for a monologue and song, including name and number. An accompanist will be provided. No electronic music accompaniment (CD, taped music, etc.), a cappella singing or self-accompaniment will be allowed. Give your music to the accompanist immediately before your audition.
- Acting only or Singing only will be given 60 Seconds, including name and number. If you are called back, you may be asked to sing another selection (no time limit). You should prepare two numbers and bring music for the accompanist. If you photocopy your music, make sure the copy is legible!
- Dance auditions begin at 4:00 p.m. and run until 5:00 p.m. Dancers are not be required to prepare material in advance. If you plan to dance, you should be familiar with common dance terminology. Bring your dance clothes and shoes with you in the morning, and you can change in Wright Auditorium prior to the dance auditions. You will receive a cloth number in your registration packet when you check in on Saturday morning. Pin the number on your chest where it will be visible, and return it before you leave the dance auditions. The choreographer will lead the group through a brief warm-up, assorted combinations, and across-the-floor routines. Choreography will include modern, ballet, and folk steps. Dance callbacks will be posted at the end of the dance auditions.
- Callback interviews for all categories are scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Carefully check callback sheets for times and locations because times may vary.
- Callbacks will be posted in the lobby of Wright Auditorium after each group of 25. If you are chosen for a callback, select a time and print your name and audition number on the Callback Sign-Up Sheet posted outside the company callback room.
- P/R Only (Photo/Resume requests) if it says P/R Only on the callback sheet you should not sign up for a time slot, leave your photo and resume at the company callback location. Make sure your audition number and current contact information is on your resume.
WHAT TO BRING
Bring at least 10 copies of your résumé with your audition number and 8 x 10 photos to give to company representatives at callbacks. Be prepared, there are no copiers available for your use in Wright Auditorium. If you plan to audition for dance, bring appropriate clothes and shoes.
TIPS FOR PERFORMERS
Large-scale outdoor staging requires special techniques and abilities and should be considered as you select your material. Directors at acting and singing auditions will look for strong vocal projection as well as voice quality because many productions do not use microphones. You should be able to strongly project your voice with ease and versatility. Choose monologues that show your vocal abilities.
Directors are looking for clear communication of emotion. This is more than simply articulating well. You must demonstrate a thorough understanding of your character’s motivation. In selecting your piece, look for a sequence where the character’s emotions change: happiness to sadness, fear to relief, good humor to anger, and so on. Don’t do Shakespeare unless you do it very well. Stay away from monologues requiring regional dialects.
Singers should choose popular or Broadway songs rather than classical pieces, and have two songs of contrasting types . Choose pieces that demonstrates your range and versatility. Find a song you can really carry, one that plays into your strengths. When selecting your pieces, keep in mind that the accompanist will be sight-reading the music for the first time and will not transpose your music. Be sure the music is in a comfortable key for your singing voice.
Most directors attend auditions at several locations prior to making final decisions which means you may well not receive contract offers immediately after this weekend. Many decisions are made after all auditions are finished and offers begin to go out at that time. Most companies do not complete casting and hiring until March. If you receive an offer from one company but are hoping to hear from another one, it is permissible to ask that other company whether you are under consideration or not. Don’t, however, be seen as a pest by making multiple unsolicited contacts with any company.
For the 2015 auditions, both outdoor and indoor theatres will be invited to attend and participate in the audition process. We will begin to post the names of the companies attending in late September 2014.
